New Photo Exhibit Opens May 9th
at the Museum
After
many months of research and photo restoration, the
Shriver
House
Museum
is set to unveil its new photographic display located in the reception area of
the museum. New items on display
include letters, inventories, and other historic documents.
Enhanced photos of the buildings’ extensive restoration are also
included in the collection.
Now, visitors to the museum have the opportunity to read fascinating
letters and
accounts such as John Rupp’s letter documenting “
… two killed in Mr. G. Shriver’s house”.
Inventories of George’s father’s farm including 2400 gallons of
whiskey and two stills, Hettie’s 1864 inventory of household belongings which
the museum used to furnish the house, and a reprint from The Cortland Gazette
newspaper in New York which published a letter from a Union soldier describing
the saloon where he was housed in 1862.
The many photographs include the bowling alley structure in the rear of
the Shriver house which formed the backdrop for the
Lincoln
procession up
Baltimore Street
for the Gettysburg Address, the discovery of live ammunition under the
floorboards in the garret, and family pictures.
We hope that you enjoy the exhibit during your next visit to the
Shriver
House
Museum
