Museum Staff Visits Henrietta Shriver's gravesite

Group marker.JPG (42086 bytes)While researching the Shriver family we had no problem finding the burial sites of Sadie, Mollie, and George Shriver.  However, Hettie's gravesite proved more difficult to find.  With the help of our intern, Sheri Szymczyk, it was discovered Hettie left Gettysburg in the 1870's.  Upon her death in 1916 she was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, DC.

The Shriver House staff took a road trip to visit Hettie's gravesite.  She is buried in her daughter's family grave site.  We brought a handful of dirt from the Shriver House garden to spread on Hettie's grave to bring a small bit of Gettysburg back to her.   A rubbing was made of Hettie's headstone and it now hangs by George's headstone rubbing in the museum of the Shriver House.

We also learned that Hettie's daughter, Lillie Pittenturf-Hollebaugh, had three children.  This is an exciting discovery since this is the first time we heard of any descendents of Hettie.  If anyone has any information regarding the Hollebaugh family in Washington, DC, we would appreciate hearing from you.Grave marker.jpg (49725 bytes)
