“The
Gardener’s Daughter”
Several
years ago Heide Presse, an artist from
Tampa
,
Florida
, came through the
Shriver
House
Museum
and fell in love with the
house and its story. She asked if
she could use the Shriver's home as a backdrop for one of her paintings, and
after seeing samples of her work, there was not a second of hesitation.
Heide
enlisted the help of two young
Gettysburg
girls, Emma McSherry and
Melanie duBois, to portray Mollie and
Sadie Shriver. Dressed in mid-19th
century clothing, they spent the afternoon playing in the Shriver girls’
bedroom while Heide took countless photographs.
After a while the girls started to get on each others’ nerves a bit so
Heide decided to let them run around in the garden to let off some steam.
Wouldn’t you know, they both spied the watering can at the same time
and an argument pursued over who would water the flowers.
As Melanie walked away for a moment with a despondent look on her face,
Heide captured that ‘Ha, Ha! I got
the watering can!’ smirk on Emma’s face.
The result is this beautiful painting which Heide calls “The
Gardener’s Daughter”.
Our interpretation, however,
envisions Mollie Shriver helping her mother, Hettie, water the garden (though
it’s not clear by the expression on her face whether this task is considered
work or play).
Heide's paintings have been
juried into many exhibitions including the American and National Watercolor
Societies, as well as the prestigious national Arts for the Parks competition.
Named 'artist to watch' by US Art
and
Wildlife
Art magazines,
she has been featured in numerous publications.
